The Pit of Artificers is one of the most important endgame activities in Diablo 4. Whether you’re looking to unlock higher Torment difficulties, upgrade your Paragon Glyphs, or farm Masterworking materials, understanding how Artificer Tiers work is essential for progressing your character into the late game. While many players enter The Pit for the first time without issues, unlocking higher Artificer Tiers can sometimes be confusing.

This guide explains exactly how to unlock Artificer Tiers in Diablo 4, how tier progression works, and the fastest way to climb through the Pit efficiently.

What Are Artificer Tiers?

Artificer Tiers are the difficulty levels within The Pit of Artificers. Each tier increases enemy strength, boss difficulty, and the rewards you receive upon completion. Higher tiers offer better Masterworking materials, greater character progression opportunities, and access to more challenging endgame content.

The Pit functions similarly to Greater Rifts from Diablo III. Players enter a timed dungeon, defeat enemies to fill a progress bar, and then defeat a boss before the timer expires. Successfully completing a run unlocks additional tiers and allows further progression.

How to Unlock The Pit of Artificers

Before you can unlock Artificer Tiers, you must first gain access to The Pit itself.

The requirements generally include:

Reaching endgame progression
Completing the necessary unlock quest or seasonal requirement
Obtaining Runeshards (or Artificer’s Stones, depending on the current season)
Accessing the Artificer’s Obelisk in Cerrigar, Scosglen

Runeshards can be earned through several endgame activities, including:

Nightmare Dungeons
Helltides
Legion Events
World Bosses
Tree of Whispers activities

Once you have enough Runeshards, interact with the Artificer’s Obelisk to open a Pit portal and begin your first run.

How Artificer Tier Progression Works

The key to unlocking higher Artificer Tiers is simple: complete Pit runs successfully before the timer expires.

Each successful completion unlocks additional tiers based on how quickly you finish the dungeon. Faster clears allow you to skip tiers and climb the ladder much more rapidly.

Tier Unlock Rules

When you defeat the Pit boss:

Less than 4 minutes remaining: unlock +1 tier
Between 4 and 6 minutes remaining: unlock +2 tiers
More than 6 minutes remaining: unlock +3 tiers

For example:

Complete Tier 20 with only 2 minutes remaining and you’ll unlock Tier 21.
Complete Tier 20 with 5 minutes remaining and you’ll unlock Tier 22.
Complete Tier 20 with 7 minutes remaining and you’ll unlock Tier 23.

This system rewards powerful builds capable of clearing content quickly.

Why Some Tiers Appear Missing

One common source of confusion occurs when players join friends who have already unlocked higher Pit levels.

If you participate in a friend’s Tier 80 run without personally unlocking the previous tiers, you may suddenly gain access to some higher tiers while lower tiers remain unavailable. This can create gaps in your tier list. Community reports indicate that these missing tiers become available as you continue completing Pit runs on your own.

The game only tracks tiers you have personally unlocked through progression, so playing with higher-level friends can sometimes create unusual-looking tier selections.

Rewards for Higher Artificer Tiers

One major reason to push Artificer Tiers is access to Masterworking materials.

The Pit is the primary source of these valuable resources, which are used to enhance endgame gear. Higher tiers provide increasingly valuable crafting materials.

Common reward thresholds include:

Tier 1–29
Obducite
Used for early Masterworking upgrades
Tier 30–59
Ingolith
Required for mid-level Masterworking ranks
Tier 60+
Neathiron
Needed for high-end Masterworking upgrades and fully optimized gear

As your character becomes stronger, pushing higher Artificer Tiers becomes one of the most efficient ways to improve overall power.

Fastest Way to Unlock Higher Artificer Tiers

If your goal is to climb Pit tiers quickly, focus on speed rather than maximum difficulty.

Many experienced players farm tiers they can clear comfortably with 6 or more minutes remaining on the clock. This consistently grants the maximum +3 tier unlock bonus and dramatically accelerates progression.
